Meet your doula

Being a doula isn’t just a job to me , it’s a calling.

meet Brittanie

My pronouns are she/her. I do belong to the LGBTQ+ community. I have a wife and I’m a mom to an amazing little boy which took us about 3-years to conceive.

I was raised by my southern mama with a little twist of Jamaican in her. She instilled the morals and values in me that I have today. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2021, but that gave me the push I needed to pursue my dreams.

My hobbies include cooking, playing chess, nature walks, and planting. I’ve been playing chess since the 3rd grade and have won 2nd place in the country. Chess has contributed to me possessing the skills of: planning ahead, thinking of cause and effect, and quick thinking on the fly. These skills are crucial during labor and delivery.

MY journey to becoming a BIRTH doula

My journey to becoming a doula began with wanting to be an OBGYN, but not ready for medical school yet. What really pushed me to becoming a doula was finding out about the increasing Black maternal mortality rate in America. Did you know in 2021 Black women had a mortality rate of being 2.6 times higher than White women? I wanted to be the voice of empowerment to ALL women/birthing people. I want to share my knowledge to help them make educated decisions and also to support them in asking questions to healthcare providers. I was so passionate that I left my full-time job and decided that this was my calling.

I began my doula training shortly after with DONA International and quickly fell in love with the work. It was an incredible feeling to be able to support other families during such a transformative time in their lives. I felt honored to be a part of their journey, and I was constantly amazed by the strength and resilience of the families I worked with. It truly is a blessing to be with these families and provide them with help. It is not just for the birthing person, but also to teach the spouse how to support their partner in various ways.

Brittanie held me up while I gave birth, cheering me on. She sat by my side (along with my partner) for over 26 hours while I was in labor. She stayed 2 hours after I gave birth to make sure my partner & I were okay. She even came to my house and cooked for me while I recovered.
